I just discovered this today when I looked at my blog while not logged in. There were three ads across the top and they were not discreet at all. Two of the three featured prominent breasts hanging out over a bikini top! I pay for a premium account, and I assumed since I was not seeing ads, I was paying for an ad-free blog. Now I find out that has never been the case. I like Wordpress, but it is a little expensive for my uses, especially if I now have to pay an additional $30 per blog to be ad-free.

Sarah,

First off, I am a lifetime salesman and have read and listened to many sales/marketing guru's in addition to having my own life experiences. I and 41 and know a little about cold calling, as I have done so for many years (although I do not currently engage in the practice for my current business). I disagree with your assessment of cold calling. First off cold calling does work for certain types of businesses (some of which rely solely on cold calling).

Your assessment of cold calling seems, to be based upon the online method and does not address the offline value. Yes cold callers are annoying, yes you have to handle rejection well, and yes the overall success rate is fairly low. It's a numbers game. However, the success rate is dependent upon how well your sales message is conveyed, if you are likeable/believable, and how well you cover objections. While one would not likely debate a Harvard study on success rate, what were the variables set forth in their study? Online of offline? What were they selling? Isn't successful marketing utilizing all methods that can propel your business forward? My point is when you overlook an avenue that can expand your business you are leaving money on the table.

As far as cold calling being expensive I complete disagree. Bringing in new customers is usually expensive regardless of the avenue. Buying links is expensive. Submitting articles, SEO and social media is also time consuming. Advertising via print, radio, and television is also expensive but should it be ignored? Marketing is time consuming period. The cost of cold calling is comparable depending on how you engage. The goal is to capitalize on these cold calls and make these people lifetime customers with repeat business. If you can do this then, what is it worth to you?

Cold calling works that's why it's still in practice today; whether or not it's annoying is besides the point. Does it drive repeat business is the question, and I can tell you that it does. The success rate and variables are different for online versus offline. Cold calling does lead to lifetime customers and you can build up a very successful business from cold calling only. So to suggest to ignore it would be foolish in my opinion.

Hi Mike

Thanks for your comment. The incident of people posting negative comments is actually very low, especially if it is not a large and/or global brand. You can easily set up notifications to alert you when a Facebook comment has been made, so it would not be that time consuming to monitor, even for small companies.

While Facebook may not be for everyone, there are huge advantages which are worth considering when making the decision to set a page up or not.

Thanks
